FlightSimExpo 2026 shows that helicopter flight dynamics remain a priority at both Laminar Research and Microsoft/Asobo.

FlightSimExpo has long been a highlight of the simming calendar, and this year’s event in Saint Paul, Minnesota (June 12–14, 2026) delivered plenty to think about – especially for those of us who live in the rotary‑wing world. Here’s my take on the announcements that matter most for helicopter pilots across simulators, hardware, and add‑ons.

Simulators: A Big Month for MSFS

Microsoft Flight Simulator continues to grow. In the keynote, Jorg Neumann announced the second‑highest Monthly Active Users count since MSFS 2020 launched – the only month higher being the Top Gun: Maverick release in 2022. For the helicopter community, this surge suggests we may be welcoming many new rotor‑heads soon!

World Update: National Parks & Monuments (July 4, 2026)

Hot on the heels of World Update 21: Australia, MSFS is about to receive a sweeping new update covering iconic U.S. national parks – from Acadia to the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone to Yosemite, and many more. For those of us who enjoy helicopter group flights, this will be a goldmine. July is going to be spectacular!

An improved data source for water‑edge rendering was also announced for territories covered in the new World Update – a small but meaningful boost to realism, especially in coastal and alpine environments.

City Update 15: Illinois, Wisconsin & Minnesota

Released during the expo, this update brings new TIN scenery to numerous Midwest cities. My own celebratory group flight from Racine, MN to Chicago, IL pushed my stream performance to its limits, but the visual detail was undeniable.

Flight Model Developments

X‑Plane

Marco Auer teased a forthcoming helicopter‑focused flight model update, including rotor blade tracking and new helicopter procedures. This is a promising sign for X‑Plane rotor‑heads.

MSFS

Sebastian Wloch highlighted several enhancements aimed squarely at helicopter realism and development:

  • Improved atmospheric turbulence visualization – especially useful for alpine flying, Foehn winds, and downdrafts.

  • Four new helicopter developer‑mode tools:

    • Assistance debug for visualizing cyclic, collective, and tail rotor assists

    • Rotor blade polar debug for lift/drag tuning and blade AoA

    • Vortex Ring State debug with real‑time VRS risk visualization

    • Phase lag debug for fine‑tuning cyclic response, dissymmetry of lift, and blade elasticity

These tools show a level of helicopter‑specific attention we seldom see in home flight simulation. Developers I spoke with were cautiously optimistic, from “this is certainly going to be helpful” to “let’s see how it works in practice”.

Seb also demonstrated a new turbulence diagnostic tool that reveals not just the intensity of turbulence but its cause. For realism‑focused pilots, this is a welcome step forward.

MSFS Marketplace & Updates

Jorg Neumann returned to discuss Marketplace improvements:

  • Daily add‑on updates – a major improvement over the previous backlog.

  • Real‑time developer warnings and error reporting

  • Removal of false reviews – a much‑demanded cleanup effort

I’ll add my own call here: Microsoft still needs to address low‑quality, misleading add‑ons that erode trust in the Marketplace. The community deserves better.

Upcoming Releases

  • Aircraft & Avionics Update 5 – includes a refreshed iniBuilds Bell 47J

  • Sim Update 6 – now expected July/August, delayed due to ongoing work on SU5.1, which aims to stabilise performance for console users

Hardware: Force Feedback Takes Centre Stage

While helicopter‑specific hardware was scarce, the force‑feedback renaissance continues:

WinCTRL Cyber Taurus

A new line of FFB bases offering the option of: 16 Newton Meters; 29 N·m; or a staggering 82 N·m! For context, the Moza AB6 offers 6 N·m – so yes, these things could probably wrench your shoulder if you’re not careful! The rep suggested 16 N·m is the sweet spot for most simmers.

The Cyber Taurus line should be on sale within a year.

Virpil VPC ATLAS FFB

Shipping “late Q4 2026”, with 45 N·m peak, and 25 N·m sustained.

Virpil clearly has helicopter pilots in mind – the Bell 205 in their promo trailer reveals that. And for those who enjoy a bit of visual flair, the transparent RGB‑lit panels will be a hit.

Software Add‑ons

Miltech revealed Miltech Experience, a persistent aircraft‑ownership system where wear, condition, and maintenance affect how your aircraft flies. I haven’t seen the full presentation yet, but I’m hoping to bring the Miltech team onto a livestream soon to dig deeper.

Final Thoughts

FlightSimExpo 2026 delivered a surprising amount of helicopter‑focused news – from flight model improvements to new scenery, new tools for developers, and a growing hardware ecosystem. It’s encouraging to see both Microsoft and Laminar continuing to invest in rotary‑wing realism.

If I missed something that caught your attention, I’d love to hear about it. Join the conversation in our community Discord, and let’s keep pushing helicopter simulation forward together.

What I’m working on

I’ve recently been sent a 2024 upgrade of a 2020 helicopter product, so I hope to have one of my famously-detailed reviews online within a week! And a new Moza AB-6 stick is on the way for the purposes of review.

What I’m looking forward to

  • Miravia Softworks’ Emergency Dispatcher Pro seems to be very close!

  • Taog’s Hangar ‘Dauphin’ and ‘Dolphin’ twin pack

  • Updated Power Lines from Mamu Design
